Deep Thoughts

EVER WONDER...

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Spring Convention '08

What's East of East Hempstead?
According to Columbus, that would be West Hempstead, you just have sail around the world. Or, you could take the easy way out and use the LIRR. Either way, West Hempstead is the site of this year's Spring Convention Shabbaton.
My first JEP Shabbaton ever was Spring Convention 1997. I don't remember it like it was yesterday, but I do remember it like it was about 11 years ago. Funny thing about time, it moves at roughly the same speed as our calendar.
And so, I look forward to a fun Shabbaton in West Hempstead this weekend. We've planned some pretty awesome games, including some that we haven't done in years. Should be great!

M & M's

For those of you who didn't make it to the bris of Yehuda's son (which took place on Thursday morning), his name is Meir Simcha.

They're going to call him Michaelangelo. I think. Maybe.

Betcha can't say Meir Maryles 10 times fast.

Mdeir maryles, Meir Maryles, meir marules ,esir marules meir maeryles meuszkrls meirmar ylrs meir mafryeles mamamaamororemarryryrleslssmadmekftjdes.

The Latke and the Hamantash at the Fifty-Yard Line

One of the epic battles in Jewish history involved not the Greeks, Romans or Egyptians. It did not make use of sword, spear or machine gun. Indeed, the great debate of Hamentasch or Latke has raged for centuries, but only recently has it come to the forefront with great intelectuals and academics extolling the virtues of either one.

According to Alan Dershowitz, the Latke has increased United States dependence on foreign oil. However, according to literature professor Diana Henderson, "The latke is appropriate for lyric, tragic, and epic forms", but "There is very little poetry in the prune," a common hamentashen filling

A fascinating debate, and you get get lots of details on it by clicking here.

Visitors from outer space

It was a dark and stormy afternoon (it really was) this past shabbos, when i was suddenly visited by 5 strange, otherworldly creatures, and 4 of them were not named Azi.
No, but really. It's true!
It was my pleasant surprise to welcome a visit by Azi, Yaakov Akerman, Mordi Swed, Eddie Beylin and Forrset Grossman. It's always nice to see Nageela people, even if they are a bit strange.

Next question

Since everyone was so excited to find out the kind of questions we ask counselors when they apply for a job, here's another actual question from the Camp Nageela Counselor Competence Exam.

When a camper is feeling down, what do you say to cheer them up ?

a. "At least one day you'll be taller than Dani (if not next week)."
b. "Yehuda just broke another chair
c. "Look some guys in spandex are dancing on the roof!"
d. "Hey kid, do you want some candy?"
e. "Let's go to the infirmary and make believe you're sick."
f. "It could be worse, you could be in Dorky's bunk."

Thanks to Aaron Brody and his imaginary friend Gerald.

Nice to see everyone

I went to Effie's wedding tonight, and it was nice to see alot of Nageela staff (and former Nageela staff) there. Let's see if I can name everyone:

N. Spektor, Scott Miller, Rabbi Shenker, Chief, Yehuda, Shaya, Goob, Joe Golavanov, Lazer Weisz, Yosaif Cohen, Eric Shein, Yaakov Akerman, Azi Steiner, Binyomin Aranowicz, I can't think of any others at the moment.
