Shabbaton anyone?

Hey, I wasn't there. It's too warm for a party shabbaton, anyway.
We'd like to hear from you guys who were.
How was the EB/Philly Shabbaton/ Nets game?
How was the Party Shabbaton?
Please post your comments if you were there, and if you have pictures, send 'em my way and I'll post some.

Oh boy.

You asked for it sam.
For fairly obvious reasons, I wasn't planning on making a blog post about the fire in camp, but I guess it's out there, so no avoiding it. Here are the answers to some FAQ's.
Yes, there was a fire in the social hall. No, nobody was hurt. Yes, the goats are safe. No, AL Quaeda was not involved. Yes, it will be rebuilt. No, there won't be a retractable dome in the new social hall.
Hope that will take care all your questions.
I'll keep you posted when I know more information.

It's nice to see conversation continuously occupying the tag-board. Sorry I haven't posted in a little while, but It's really been too hot to stay out of the pool long enough to write a blog post. Hope everyone forgives me, as I'm suffering out here without my Nageela ppl.
Where are all my Nageela ppl?

Obama song?

About 9 years ago in Nageela, there was a counselor named Barak. Appropriately, we had a song for his name. It went something like this:
Barak Barak, Barak, Barak.
Barak Barak, Barak, Barak.
Barak Barak, Barak, BarakBarak.
BarakBarakBarakBararak, hey! etc.

Sorry if the tune didn't come through so well. I wonder if the whitehouse will agree to adopt it as the official presidential standard.

I'm a big kid now...

Well, no, I'm not really a big kid. But Tova is. She graduates tonight from a crib to a bed. Go TOva!

Sam Lipke, Bunk 9

First Shabbos

I don't know about you, but I always find my first shabbos away from Nageela to be really hard. Aside from the fact that my hosts thought I was nuts when I wrapped myself in a talis and started speaking yiddish during lunch (for some reason the pickle juice ceremony didn't bother them), I miss seeing all you guys with that awesome shabbos energy - amped up.

I hope you all brought shabbos home in some way. If there's any way any of the Nageela staff can help or advise you, drop us an email.

Vegas

Just arrived home in Las Vegas a few hours ago... Fist thing I did (after making sure Tova and Zahava had pacifiers) was set up my comp so I could post on the blog. It was about 108 degrees here today. Thats pretty cool for August, so we're in good shape.

Started reading the yearbook last night but didn't get too far. Great articles so far. You big old softy, Jeff.

Mazal Tov

Just got back from Yaakov Simanowitz's wedding. It was awesome! Great to see all you guys who showed up for it.
I propose we have a wedding every two weeks or so just to keep the camp spirit going.

Home Again

What a strange mix of emotions. Leaving camp, coming home. Happy, sad, ticklish.
Waht am I talking about? I don't know. I was up all night binding yearbooks and burning CDs and it's been many hours since my last Mountain Dew.

But camp is empty. It's kind of depressing. Just a few hours ago it was full of the sounds of life, and now all I can hear is the horse chewing on somebody's croc that he left. Or is that an iPod he's eating? Hard to know.

How is being home? Post a comment to let us know.

Monday, August 25, 2008

Almost done

We're wrapping up here in camp. It's kind of sad, seeing everyone pack up and get ready to leave. I'm sure everyone is excited to see their families again tomorrow, but it will be bittersweet, as we've all enjoyed camp so much.

how slowwww can you go.

While traveling this week, Avi and I noticed a very disturbing sign at Washington Reagan Airport. It's disturbing on several levels.

(by the way, this isnt the actual sign, but a refabrication atempt);
Problem 1: WHY ON EARTH SIX?
Problem 2: The original sign that we saw was mounted on the same pole as a STOP sign.
I suppose then it really should read, " SPEED LIMIT 0"

Why woul I want to make a Rabbi joke?

Two priests and a rabbi were discussing what portion of the weekly collection they kept for themselves.
The first priest explained that he drew a circle on the ground, stepped a few paces back and pitched the money towards the circle. What landed in the circle he kept and what landed outside the circle God kept.
The second priest claimed that his method was almost the same, except that what landed outside the circle went to the priest and the money that landed inside the circle God kept.

The rabbi said, “I’ve got you both beat. I throw ALL the money into the air, and what God wants, God takes!”

Update

this is what the logo is looking like at this point in time. Nobody has done a very good job convincing me otherwise, so I'm leaning towards Amp.
Lots of you guys have come up with great logo ideas, though, so thanks for those, and if I get a chance I'll try to make them all into logos that I'll post.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Whoaaaaaaaaaaah!

One of my favorite potential T-shirt designs of all time is this AMP ENERGY logo. I decided last year not to use it because I was under the impression that is was not kosher.

I checked today, and according to the Star- K, AMP is kosher, so here it is!

Not enough results

With only 5 days left to vote, I really haven'y gotten enough response to make a decision. To choose one T-shirt design because 5 people like it just doesn't wash (ouch).
Get some more of your friends to answer the call... this is your choice, well at least partially. I'm taking this vote into strong consideration, so if we have a solid favorite that has a really good chance of being on your shirt.

VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

If you won't come to the Mountain

One of the least know, yet most important Jewish holidays begins tonight. Know what it is?

If you're scratching your head right now, then you probably need a new bottle of Head n Shoulders. Aside from that, you need to check out these articles about SHAVUOT.

Shavuos, or Shavuot is one of my personal favorites, and not just because my wife made cheese cake in a chocolate pie crust. It celebrates our graduation (yo, Jeff, can I get some pomp and circumstance?) from the U 0f Sinai (known as JUST- Jewish University at Sinai- Torah). It's when G-d gave us all the instructions and tools we need to be good people and productive people. In honor of that, some of us stay up all night (just like color war) and sleep all day (like a waiter).

I plan on learning Torah all night long tonight. Crack open a Jewish book and learn a bit yourself. The credits count towards your graduation.

New Basketball Court

BREAKING NEWS!

Rabbi Shenker informed me today that construction has been completed on a
NEW BASKETBALL COURT!

As soon as I have some pictures, I'll post them.
In the meanwhile, just to give you an idea of about where it is, take a look and you'll see there's a large area between the 1st base line of the baseball field, and Rt. 42. Part of that area is taken by the paintball field, nowthere will is a basketball court there as well.
Also coming is a new volleyball court, up in the woods behind the existing V-ball court, and hopefully a new baseball field- and if we're lucky- a gym? Could it be? Start the rumors... you never know.

Ohavia's Wedding

Just came home from Ohavia's wedding. It was awesome! We all had lots of JEP candy and chap-a-Nosh food.
Well, not really, but Yehuda still did hog the Mic, except when Shaya was able to pry it away from him.

exercise is good for you.

Anyone who's ever filled up the JEP van knows how true this is. In other news, Rabbi Shenker has announced that Brim will be biking to Wal-Mart daiy .

New recruiting video

I'm sure the aspiration of every Nageela camper and staff member is to help all of your friends come to Nageela. Unfortunately, we've been hampered by a general dearth of quality recuiting videos- the Nageela boys videos have been great, but how can we recruit girls with a boys video?

I think it would go something like this:

YOU: "See that trip to Hershey Park? Looks cool, doesn't it?"

GIRL: "Yeah, but how come I don't see any girls in the video?"

YOU: "Those are really girls, they just look like boys."

GIRL: "You mean that one in the red cheerleader's dress?"

YOU: "No, that really is a boy. A staff member."

GIRL: "And you like this camp because..."

or like this

GIRL: "How am I supposed to know anything about Nageela for Girls, if all these videos are full of boys?"

YOU: "Look beyond the boys. Imagine the same activities with girls."

GIRL: "OK, but I'm having trouble with the badadadadum part."

But now, Mordechai Shenker has produced a brand new recruiting video- all the best moments of the boys camp and the girls camp- put together. It will be published soon, and you can order them for your friends by calling or emailing the Nageela office.

Here's a rough sample of what the CD cover should look like.

GLORY DAYS

Here it is, the big announcement!

Camp Nageela is totally pumped to welcome back
RABBI STAUM
as part of our Head Staff this summer.

Rabbi served as Head Counselor of Camp Nageela during the summer of '05, and currently lives in St. Louis. We can't wait for the greatest summer in Nageela history!

Rabbi Staum is also famous as being one of the original Judgecredibles.

Bringing back the glory days!

At the top of Slide Mountain (the highest mountain in the catskills, standing a gigantic 36 feet above Steinman's head)- left to right: Forrest Grossman, Harlan Grossman, Dani Locker, Daniel Weisz, Rabbi Staum, Artem Yashayev, Emmanuel Medevoy).

You can also check out this video from Nageela '05 (watch the end by the credits for a Rabbi Staum outtake)

Q: Why can't you keep a clock in jail?

A: Because time is always running out.

OUCH!!!

Welcome Back to me

Israel was incredible, but now I'm back home, so back to work on making Nageela 08 even better than Nageela 08 has ever been (hey, no wisecracks, I know Nageela 08 hasn't been yet, I'm not as stupid as I look).

I'll leave you with another few pics from my Israel trip
Although that family picture is actually at the Kotel (Western Wall), the picture of just Tova at the wall does look a bit strange, doesn't it?
DOESN'T TOVA LOOK A LITTLE TOO BIG FOR THE WALL?
It's actually a model at a tourist attraction called mini Israel, where they have models of all the famous places in Israel. It even has little people shuckling as they pray.
Cute.
I wonder if they sing Aleinu in English.

the sefardi

A funny Purim video starring Meir Vinter, Aryeh Steinman, Aaron Stein and Yoni Polatoff.

For a little background to help you understand, sefardic (Jews from the Middle East, Spain, North Africa and some parts of New Jersey) and ashkenazic Jews (Jews from Europe and Pennsylvania) have some different customs, one of the more famous differences is that Sepharadim eat things like rice on Passover, while Ashkenazim do not. Another important peice of background to note is that Stein really didn't want to dress like a woman again. They forced him. No, really. I mean it.

Israel Update- Tuesday

A lot going on, and I'm so tired it feels like I'm a whole day or two into camp. So I'll cut it short. I had the privelege today to be at the Western Wall (Kotel) for the Birchas Kohanim (blessing of the kohanim), when thousands of people come to get blessed by literally thousands of kohanim at the wall.
Don't ask about the bus ride back (holding on to the back of the bus with one hand and holding on to Tova with the other (only slight exaggeration).
Then we went to the ancient ruin of Mesada. Really amazing place with a sad story attached to it.n If you have any interest, you can
read about it here.

Exciting News!

Things are heating up in the Nageela office.

Look for an exciting announcement in the upcoming weeks.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Hi from Israel

I'm writing this post from my parents' apartment. No, not their home in New Jersey, their apartment in Jerusalem, Israel. It's awesome to be here, and I hope you all get to experience Passover in Israel. Today I had the privelege of visiting Hebron and praying at the site where the founders of our Nation are buried. The two security checkpoints didn't really bother me, after going through metal detectors 14 times on my way to Israel at the Rome Airport (that's a whole nuthu' story, for a different time. They have to be pretty careful about security there- in fact the bus we went in had bulletproof windows (although I think we were in more danger from the driver than from terrorists).
Tomorrow we plan on visiting Ir David, the place where King David lived and was buried. I hope to keep all two of you updated.

I'm Hooked

A young sailor was sitting in a bar having a few drinks when he looks over and sees a pirate. The pirate has a wooden peg-leg, a hook for a hand, and patch over his eye. Unable to resist, the sailor asks “How’d you end up with a peg-leg?”
“I was swept overboard during a fierce storm,” says the pirate. “and a bloody shark bit off me whole leg!”
“Holy cow!” said the sailor. “What about the hook, how’d you get that?”
“Me crew and I were boarding an enemy ship, a fierce sword battle ensued. One of them cut me arm!”
“Absolutely incredible!” gasped the sailor. “And the eye patch, tell me how you got that?”
“A bloody seagull dropping fell into me eye,” replied the pirate.
“Umm, you lost your eye to a seagull dropping?” asked the sailor, astonished.
Embarassed, the pirate answered “It was me first day with the hook.”

A typical day in the office

This is not really anything unusual, just thought I'd give all of you a glimpse of Rabbi Shenker in action.
And, no. It was not posed. He really carries on two phone conversations at once. Don't ask me how.

News Flash

Strange things happen in the world of Camp Nageela, but prepare yourself for this one. Ladies and gentlemen, as crazy as it may sound, it does seem as if Yosaif Cohen will be attending a shabbaton this weekend, in Philadelphia, PA. Now, I know what you're thinking- it's only Friday morning, alot can change in the next 6 hours or so, but reliable sources tell me that this is not just a publicity stunt, that Mr. Cohen does indeed intend to attend this shabbaton.
The question now begs to be asked, "so why doesn't he ever come to shabbatons where Nageela kids show up? Where was he in EB, at Shalom Torah, at the Nageela reunion, at the Party Shabbaton?" Speculations abound, but only Yosaif knows the real answer...

Deep Thoughts

EVER WONDER...

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Spring Convention '08

What's East of East Hempstead?
According to Columbus, that would be West Hempstead, you just have sail around the world. Or, you could take the easy way out and use the LIRR. Either way, West Hempstead is the site of this year's Spring Convention Shabbaton.
My first JEP Shabbaton ever was Spring Convention 1997. I don't remember it like it was yesterday, but I do remember it like it was about 11 years ago. Funny thing about time, it moves at roughly the same speed as our calendar.
And so, I look forward to a fun Shabbaton in West Hempstead this weekend. We've planned some pretty awesome games, including some that we haven't done in years. Should be great!

For those of you who didn't make it to the bris of Yehuda's son (which took place on Thursday morning), his name is Meir Simcha.

They're going to call him Michaelangelo. I think. Maybe.

The Latke and the Hamantash at the Fifty-Yard Line

One of the epic battles in Jewish history involved not the Greeks, Romans or Egyptians. It did not make use of sword, spear or machine gun. Indeed, the great debate of Hamentasch or Latke has raged for centuries, but only recently has it come to the forefront with great intelectuals and academics extolling the virtues of either one.

According to Alan Dershowitz, the Latke has increased United States dependence on foreign oil. However, according to literature professor Diana Henderson, "The latke is appropriate for lyric, tragic, and epic forms", but "There is very little poetry in the prune," a common hamentashen filling

A fascinating debate, and you get get lots of details on it by clicking here.
